NEF to JPG: Step-by-Step Guide for Windows & Mac
What NEF and JPG are
- NEF — Nikon Electronic Format: Nikon’s RAW format containing unprocessed sensor data and metadata; large files, higher dynamic range, non-destructive edits.
- JPG (JPEG) — Compressed image format; smaller files, widely compatible, lossy compression.
Why convert NEF → JPG
- Share or upload images easily (web, social, email).
- Reduce storage and speed up previewing.
- Produce final, edited images for printing or distribution.
Before you convert (recommended)
- Back up originals (keep NEF files).
- Decide output quality/size and color/profile (sRGB for web, Adobe RGB for print).
- If color/tonal edits are needed, apply them to NEF first (use raw editor) then export to JPG.
